Presented by Bruce Power & Suppliers

Join us this year and help support local healthcare!

Since its start in 2018 (no event in 2020 and a small virtual event in 2021 due to Covid) riders and sponsors in the Gran Fondo Lake Huron, presented by Bruce Power & Suppliers have raised over $1.3 million and this year your fundraising will mean that you and all the other fundraising riders will continue to support healthcare and hospital needs for our local and regional hospitals. You’ve helped fund numerous life-saving items like defibrillators, crash carts, cardiac monitors and a new CT scanner.
We are also proud to announce that Gran Fondo Lake Huron has been named a 2024 Top 100 Award Winner.

This year’s ride will help replace key mammography equipment

Brightshores Health System is excited to announce we will be replacing key mammography equipment to better serve our patients. We operate two digital units, along with a biopsy chair and specimen unit, all of which require replacement. Currently, only one Mammography unit is able to perform tomosynthesis imaging. This is where 3-dimensional image acquisition occurs to create ‘slices’ of the breast and are reformatted in different planes/directions (think of a mini-CT scanner for the breast!). This type of imaging helps the radiologists navigate through the breast tissue and identifies areas that may require further evaluation, especially in dense breast tissue.

Recognizing the importance of technology advances, Brightshores will be obtaining tomosynthesis imaging capability on both Mammography units. This decision aligns with the upcoming Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) expansion to include patients as young as 40 years old effective fall 2024 (see Ontario to lower age for regular breast cancer screenings to 40 | CBC News ). The age expansion for OBSP may increase the need for tomosynthesis imaging due to the higher prevalence of dense breasts in younger populations. The new units will also offer improvements in image quality and additional patient comfort features. Brightshores will ensure the retention of interventional capabilities to support our biopsy services as well as the purchase of a new patient biopsy chair to enhance patient comfort during these procedures. Specimen imaging will be available in the mammography suite to help confirm a successful biopsy and reduce the time needed to complete the procedure.

With these new advancements, technological changes and improved patient comfort features, your donations will ensure Brightshores Health System is creating a positive experience for our Breast Imaging patients. Thank you!

100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly toward the fundraising initiatives detailed on our fundraising goal for the year.
